Knight of Swords

The Knight of Swords is Fire of Air — thought set into urgent, forward-rushing motion — and the card describes the quality of focused, headlong pursuit: the conviction that has no patience for half-measures, the argument that advances without pausing to consider whether the moment is right. He is traditionally associated with speed, decisiveness, and a kind of mental courage that can shade into recklessness. His blade is raised not for display but for use; the question the card carries is whether the charge is aimed well and whether the terrain ahead has been adequately considered. Imagery

Commonly depicted as an armored figure on a horse charging at full gallop, sword raised, the horse's mane and the rider's plumes streaming in the wind — the composition almost always one of forward momentum at the expense of caution. Storm clouds or wind-bent trees in the background are traditional, and the horse's posture rarely suggests the possibility of stopping.
