The Sun

The Sun is among the most unambiguously positive cards in the Major Arcana. It speaks to joy, confidence, vitality, and the clear-sighted success that arrives when energy flows freely and authentically. Solar clarity is the card's gift: things that were obscured in the Moon's half-light are now fully visible, and what is visible turns out to be good. Traditionally it governs happiness, health, childhood, and the straightforward pleasure of being alive in a body in a world that is, in this moment, warm. It also has a quality of outward expression — this is not internal contentment alone but a radiance that can be perceived from the outside.

Imagery

The Sun is commonly depicted with a large blazing sun above a joyful child — often riding a white horse, arms open — in a garden of sunflowers. The child is frequently shown unclothed, suggesting the ease and transparency of someone with nothing to conceal; a red banner waves behind them as an emblem of vitality.

Reversed

The light briefly clouded — joy dimmed or strained, clarity not quite reaching the ground.

Reversed, the Sun remains one of the deck's kinder cards — its light is not extinguished, only temporarily obscured. The reversal describes joy that feels muted or effortful, vitality at a lower ebb, a happiness present but harder to feel or trust. It can point to overoptimism — a brightness asserted over a reality it is not quite matching — or to success that is delayed, clarity that has not yet fully arrived. The reversal can also speak to a neglected inner spontaneity, the childlike ease of the upright card buried under self-consciousness or strain. Traditionally the card reversed counsels patience rather than alarm: the warmth is real and recoverable, and the obscuring clouds are usually passing rather than permanent. The task is to clear what stands between oneself and a light that is still, fundamentally, shining.
