King of Pentacles

The King of Pentacles is the suit's mature sovereign: a figure who has moved through all the stages of building and arrived at genuine mastery of the material domain. Air of Earth brings intellectual authority to earthy substance — this is not just wealth accumulated but wealth understood, managed, and deployed with strategic clarity. Traditionally the card speaks to financial acumen, executive authority, the capacity to create prosperity and sustain it, and the kind of dependable, substantial leadership that people trust with their resources. His shadow is a tendency to equate worth with material achievement; his strength is that he is genuinely capable of what he claims.

Imagery

Often depicted as a richly robed king seated on a throne decorated with bulls and vines, holding a scepter and a large pentacle, surrounded by lush vegetation and the symbols of abundant cultivation. The solidity of the throne and the ripeness of the garden are traditionally read as the achievement and command of someone who has mastered the material world rather than merely been born into it.

Reversed

Mastery turned to greed — abundance hoarded or squandered, worth measured only in wealth.

Reversed, the King of Pentacles turns on the material mastery of the upright card. The capable command of resources distorts into its shadow — greed, a wealth hoarded or flaunted, a stubbornness that will not adapt, a worth measured entirely in possessions and status. Air of Earth, inverted, loses either its strategic wisdom or its integrity. The reversal can describe financial recklessness behind a prosperous front, the corruption of someone who equates having with being, or a controlling grip on money and the people it touches. Traditionally the card reversed asks whether one's relationship to material success still serves a life or has become the whole of it, and counsels the recovery of the sound judgment and steadiness that built the abundance in the first place.
