The Tower

The Tower marks sudden, often disorienting upheaval — the moment a structure that could not hold finally gives way. Traditionally it speaks to shock, revelation, and the breaking of illusions; what is swept aside was rarely as solid as it appeared. For all the drama of its imagery, the card reads less as an omen of catastrophe than as a clearing: the flash of light that exposes what a false stability had concealed.

Imagery

The Tower is often depicted as a tall structure struck by lightning, its crown dislodged and figures falling from its heights against a darkened sky. The lightning is commonly read as a flash of sudden truth, the toppled crown as a misplaced certainty brought down.

Reversed

The collapse resisted or postponed — a reckoning delayed rather than escaped.

Reversed, the Tower's sudden clearing is held back. The upheaval the upright card delivers all at once is here resisted, feared, or postponed — the cracks in a false structure papered over, the necessary collapse delayed at growing cost. It can describe disaster narrowly averted, or change that comes as a slow internal crumbling rather than a single decisive strike. Traditionally the reversal suggests that the truth the lightning would reveal is being avoided, and that what is not faced abruptly will be faced eventually, more slowly and often more painfully.
