Six of Cups

The Six of Cups is traditionally associated with nostalgia, childhood memory, and the particular warmth that the past — or a return to it — can carry. The Sun in Scorpio brings genuine illumination to the normally deep and searching sign: something hidden has come into the light, something that was once simple and sweet surfaces again. The card can speak literally to reunion, childhood environments, or contact with someone from the past; at a deeper register it speaks to the way we carry our earliest experiences of safety and joy, and sometimes need to revisit them. Its danger is an idealization that refuses to move forward; its gift is the genuine nourishment available in certain kinds of looking back.

Imagery

Often depicted as a small figure offering a cup overflowing with flowers to a younger or smaller figure in a courtyard or garden setting, with additional flower-filled cups nearby. The scene carries an easy, unhurried quality, the exchange uncomplicated and freely given.

Reversed

The past overstaying — nostalgia become a refuge, or a readiness to finally step out of it.

Reversed, the Six of Cups turns on the sweetness of the past the upright card draws from. In one reading, the nostalgia has become an escape — a refuge in memory that prevents living in the present, an idealization of a past that was never quite as the longing remembers it, a reluctance to grow up or move on. In the other, the reversal marks a healthy release: leaving the childhood home, stepping out of an old self, ceasing to live in what is gone. Sun in Scorpio, inverted, either keeps what it surfaced or struggles to let it sink back. Traditionally the card reversed asks whether one's relationship to the past is nourishing or imprisoning, and whether the way forward requires honoring it or finally setting it down.
