Ocho de Espadas

El Ocho de Espadas describe una calidad particular de atrapamiento mental: la sensación de no poder moverse que es, al examinarla, al menos en parte sostenida por la creencia de que el movimiento es imposible. Júpiter en Géminis expande y multiplica la tendencia del signo doble a la sobreactividad mental — la carta puede leerse como una situación en que el propio pensamiento se ha convertido en el obstáculo, y cada salida está rodeada por una hoja de objeción o miedo. Por tradición habla de la limitación autoimpuesta, la impotencia y el modo en que un relato fuertemente sostenido de indefensión puede llegar a ser una prisión tan efectiva como cualquier fuerza externa. Su nota más profunda es que las ataduras, examinadas, pueden aflojarse — pero primero hay que verlas con claridad antes que simplemente sentirlas.

Imagery

Se muestra convencionalmente como una figura atada y con los ojos vendados rodeada de ocho espadas clavadas en el suelo, pero sin que las espadas toquen realmente a la figura — el cerco es lo bastante estrecho para sentirse aprisionador, pero hay espacio para moverse si se quitara la venda. El suelo blando y un castillo a lo lejos aparecen con frecuencia, sugiriendo que el paisaje no es inherentemente hostil.

Reversed

The bindings examined — the way out finally seen, or the prison drawn tighter still.

Reversed, the Eight of Swords turns on the self-made entrapment of the upright card. In the more hopeful reading, the blindfold slips — the bindings are seen for the loosely-tied things they were, the way out becomes visible, the narrative of powerlessness loosens its grip and movement returns. In the harder reading, the entrapment deepens: the fearful thinking tightens, the imagined walls grow more convincing, the helplessness becomes total. Jupiter in Gemini, inverted, either quiets the over-busy mind or multiplies its objections. Traditionally the card reversed sits at the hinge between imprisonment and release, and asks whether one is finally examining the restraints or talking oneself into them more thoroughly. The exit, as always with this card, begins with seeing clearly.
