Cuatro de Copas

El Cuatro de Copas habla por tradición de un estado de repliegue emocional y preocupación interior — un estado de ánimo en que uno está tan absorto en las insatisfacciones existentes, o tan entumecido por la comodidad rutinaria, que lo que se ofrece pasa desapercibido. La Luna en Cáncer vuelve el sentimiento hacia adentro y lo hace reflexivo, lo cual puede volverse contemplativo y generativo, pero en esta carta la tendencia se ha instalado en el tedio o el leve descontento. La carta no carece de valor: a veces el repliegue que describe es necesario, una pausa protectora antes de volver a comprometerse. Pero su pregunta central es si aquello en lo que uno está absorto merece realmente más atención que lo que se extiende desde afuera.

Imagery

Se muestra habitualmente como una figura sentada con los brazos cruzados, mirando hacia adentro o hacia el suelo frente a tres copas, mientras una cuarta copa es ofrecida por una mano que emerge de una nube cercana — la oferta aparentemente inadvertida o ignorada. La postura de la figura es típicamente ensimismada e impermeable, el paisaje circundante quieto.

Reversed

The eyes lifting — apathy beginning to break, or withdrawal deepening into isolation.

Reversed, the Four of Cups turns on the inward preoccupation of the upright card. In the more hopeful reading, the withdrawal lifts — the figure finally notices the offered cup, the apathy breaks, a new awareness and willingness to re-engage with what is being extended. In the harder reading, the introspection deepens past usefulness into genuine withdrawal, the discontent hardening, the offered good refused for so long that it is eventually withdrawn. Moon in Cancer, inverted, either surfaces from its brooding or sinks further into it. Traditionally the card reversed asks whether the time of turning inward has done its work, and whether one is now ready to look up and receive what the world is quietly holding out.
